Agents,

Your mission, if you choose to accept it:

WHAT: 4th Annual No Pants Metro Ride
WHEN: Sunday, January 8th, 2012 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm
WHERE: LA Metro System
BRING: $5 for Metro Day Pass, pants you can easily take off, something in which to keep them

For the 4th year in a row, GLA will be participating in Improv Everywhere's international mission, NO PANTS SUBWAY RIDE (it's their 11th annual edition of this mission) on Sunday, January 8, 2012!

We encourage everyone to travel pantsless throughout the Metro system that day.

PART ONE of the mission will be Metro rides that will travel from both ends of the Gold Line in Pasadena and East Los Angeles, from the Red Line in North Hollywood, and from the Purple Line in Koreatown to Union Station. Ride captains will begin gathering agents at their respective stations at 1pm, and they’ll have you at Union Station before 2pm for part two. They will be there to brief the agents, to answer any questions, and to have everyone de-pantsed before getting on the trains. You are welcome to start at whichever station is most convenient to you.

At 1pm, meet the ride captains at these locations:

Agent Peppermint Patty (North Hollywood): the red Metro North Hollywood sign along the east side of Lankershim

Agents Ooh-Kla & Zero (East Los Angeles): the bike racks east of the Atlantic station at the NW corner of Atlantic and Pomona

Agents Rose & Blackhart (Pasadena): the 4th floor of the parking structure by the ticket vending machines at the entrance to the Sierra Madre Villa station

Agent Red (Koreatown): the red Metro Wilshire/Western sign on the NE corner of Wilshire & Western

Ride captains will be ensuring departure from their respective stations on a prompt schedule.

Here is the schedule for each station for PART ONE of the ride:

Origin Station - Departure Time - Arrival Time at Union Station
-------------- -------------- -----------------------------
Red Line North Hollywood Station - 1:25pm - 1:55pm

Gold Line Atlantic Station (East Los Angeles) - 1:25pm - 1:49pm

Gold Line Sierra Madre Villa Station (Pasadena) - 1:24pm - 1:52pm

Purple Line Wilshire/Western Station (Koreatown)- 1:37pm - 1:50pm

PART TWO OF THE RIDE will begin with our arrival in downtown LA at Union Station. After disembarking, we will head to the north end of Union Station for our group picture. We ask you to please be at that location at 2:05pm sharp. When exiting the Gold Line, go down the stairs and turn left to go to the North end of the tunnel. When exiting the Red and Purple lines, walk in the same direction as the train was traveling and go upstairs to go the North end. The area where we will take pictures looks like this:

We will gather as a group on the distinctive red and black tile floor with the circular sunburst design. Photographers can ascend a nearby staircase to shoot the agents from above. This should take no more than 10 minutes. After pictures, we will disperse to mill around the station like the other commuters and act perfectly normal. You can use this time to take in Union Station‘s beautiful architecture, meet up with friends, grab a snack or drink, etc. Give yourself a few minutes to get down to the Red Line platform because at 2:46pm sharp, we will travel westbound on the Red Line to Hollywood. Since Union Station is an origin point for both the Red and Purple Lines, check the overhead video monitors on the boarding platform to see if the departing train is a North Hollywood (Red Line) train or a Wilshire/Western (Purple Line) train. There are also electronic signs at the front and on the sides of each train telling you which one it is. It's important to check the signs because our train may be departing from either side of the platform (of course, you could also just follow the pantsless horde of people). After we leave Union Station, we will disembark at Hollywood & Highland.

Here is the PART TWO ride schedule:

Departure Time from Union Station - Arrival Time at Hollywood/Highland Station
--------------------------------- ------------------------------------------
2:46pm - 3:07pm

(See http://www.metro.net/riding_metro/maps/default.htm to view the Metro rail maps and http://www.metro.net/riding_metro/riders_guide/planning_trip.htm to view timetables.)

Please buy a ticket ($1.50: one-way, $3.00: round-trip, $5.00: day pass). The citation for evading fare payment is $250.00, an unnecessary and expensive risk. We recommend the day pass, especially if you will be participating in both parts of the ride.

There are no set rules, but we suggest that if anyone asks why we're not wearing pants, it's best to give a simple answer such as "I forgot them". And it is of the utmost importance that we act casual, like it's an ordinary day on the Metro. We should also look and act like we do NOT all know each other.

VERY IMPORTANT: this mission obviously means no pants, but YOU MUST WEAR UNDERWEAR!!!

You should be fully clothed except for pants. The type of underwear you want to wear will be left to your discretion, but we just ask you to exercise a little common sense. The amount of skin you want to expose is your choice, but know that any citation for indecent exposure is a risk you take ON YOUR OWN.

Worried about the legality of pantslessness? This post on LAist.com from before the first year’s ride should set your mind at ease:
http://laist.com/2008/12/30/no_pants_subway_ride_coming_to_los.php

We also understand this is quite a time commitment, so you can choose your own adventure and participate in just part one or just part two. Just pay attention to the schedules and times for the part in which you’re participating.

Some additional suggestions:

-Agents should be dispersed fairly evenly on each platform so that we are distributed fairly evenly on the train instead of clumped up in one or two cars.

-Bring some sort of bag in which to carry your pants. It’s always good to have them with you in the unlikely event you have to re-pants.

-In the event that you miss any of the trains on PART ONE of the ride, they run every 12 minutes, so you should be able to catch up with everyone at Union Station.

-In the event that the Red Line train is too full for PART TWO of the ride, we'll have some agents stay behind and wait for the next train leaving Union Station at 2:58pm.

-Please do NOT disturb the civilians. We want to reiterate the importance of acting casual as it is the whole point of the mission. This should also be fun for the passengers who are wearing pants, since their most likely reaction to us will be curiosity and amusement. Don’t worry, we’ll have plenty of pantsless fun when we get off the train and onto the street at Hollywood & Highland.

-For those taking photos or videos of the event, try to be discreet and keep cameras as hidden as possible.

After arriving in Hollywood, there will be a few brief words from the organizers at the top of the first set of stairs/escalators from the boarding platform. There’s a corner off to the left where we can get out of the way of the civilians. The restaurants and bars at which we will be debriefing are TBA. At the debriefings, you can meet your fellow GLA agents, discuss this mission, give ideas for future missions, and learn how to get more involved.
