We meet up at the downtown Long Beach Transit Mall (pay parking lot - $5 for 10 hours on the weekend, and Blue Line accessible) and begin with a 4 mile Long Beach Transit Route 121 bus ride ($1.25 fare) to the scenic Naples Islands.
We start walking at the intersection of Ravenna St and 2nd St, at approximately 8:50am, walking completely around the nearly circular canal bordered central island and using stairs to climb over the 5 connecting roads, before leaving by way of the touristy stretch of 2nd street in Belmont Shore. After that, we cross center median stairways on Livingston, and those near the Belmont Pool/Pier, as we work our way toward downtown through Bluff Park, traversing the many stairways that lead from the bluff to the beach below.
After reaching downtown we traverse many public stairways and walkways looping back and forth through the downtown waterfront area including the Performing Arts Center, The Arena, Rainbow Lagoon, and the Convention Center, taking lunch at ~8.25 mile mark, before heading south, passing through Convention Center (again), The Pike, Rainbow Harbor, and passing near the Lighthouse and the Aquarium of the Pacific, toward the Queen Mary by way of the four stair sets on the Queen's Way bridge. We then head back north via the Queens Way Bridge and Caesar Chavez Park to pick up the final sets of stairs and pedestrian over-crossings at 6th and 7th streets before heading back south to the Transit Mall by way of the Promenade, a walk-street through the heart of downtown Long Beach. The total trip distance is ~15.2 miles.
We are aiming for a 2.5 to 3 mph average pace, so this is not a beginner walk. There are many places to refill water as well as use restrooms along the route. We will take some stops to talk about the different regions of the city and downtown attractions. The group will take lunch in the area near Broadway and Pacific (I like the Subway, but there are many other options along the nearby Promenade and Pine Avenue), at a restaurant or if you bring you lunch, you can eat at Lincoln Park just west of the Subway.
Since the bus is a hard constraint for the 15 mile option, please arrive at the transit mall closer to 8:15 so you have time to meet us at bus shelter H in the transit mall before 8:26 am. The bus leaves promptly, and if you miss it, the next one arrives at 8:48am, so you could take it to bluff park and get off the bus at Redondo Ave and meet the group on the paved walkway along the top of the bluff.
For those wanting to start later and just do the roughly 9 miles of downtown stairs, meet the group at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center, where Long Beach Blvd terminates into the mall area at Ocean Blvd just north of the fountains. We will arrive closer to 10:45am, maybe as late as 11am depending on group speed.
And finally the group will take Lunch at close to noon at the Subway near Pacific and Broadway, so we could be joined after Lunch at closer to 1pm for the last 7 miles, which includes all the tougher stairs and great vistas of the waterfront, Queen Mary and the Long Beach skyline.
Also note that there are many bail out options on this walk, since for the first 6 miles the route runs close to the LB Transit 121 bus route along 2nd, Livingston and Ocean, and can be taken back to the transit mall. After we reach downtown, we are seldom more than mile from the transit mall at 1st and Long Beach Blvd, so it is a short walk back to the start.
