Due to its large student population, Halifax has been known for the various cultural programs it has been conducting, for over a decade now. Halifax has been known to conduct events like no other city can offer and hence transforming itself to become a center for an array of top-notch festivals for all age groups from children to adults. Halifax festivals cover events from food to farming to street performances, art, cooking, comedy, magic, antique hunting, theatres, and other quirky local festivals. The Halifax Festivals are not limited to a particular time of the year but are spread over the year. Some of the Halifax festivals are the Halifax jazz festival, the Halifax Oyster Festival, the Lebanese Festival Halifax and the Busker Festival Halifax.
One can’t talk about the festivals without mentioning the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, a weeklong festival held indoors which is a combination of highland dancing, military traditions, acrobatic acts and trampoline routines! This is the largest annual indoor show held across the globe and is a must see. While speaking of performances one must also catch the Halifax Jazz Festival conducted in July, this 5-day festival is Atlantic Canada’s largest summer festival and is a must watch for anyone who is visiting Halifax at that time. Another great performance to catch along with the Halifax Jazz Festival is the busker festival Halifax spread over six days, the best street performers across the world exhibit their talent with their acrobats, music, fire -breathing tactics. The Halifax Jazz Festival and the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo are a delight for both adults and children.
As a food lover, one must not miss out on the Halifax oyster festival, an oyster festival spread over three tasting sessions showcasing a variety of raw oyster accompanied with beer/wine with young artists/bands playing through the day. The festival has many varieties of sessions which people can choose from which have been accordingly priced. The Lebanese festival Halifax conducted in July is another food festival that one must not miss out on. The event is held over three days and carries no charge. Known to literally bring Lebanon cuisines, traditional music and top Lebanon artists/ bands to Halifax, this event is sure to catch one’s eye and taste buds. There are tons of upcoming food festivals lined up in June such as Ribfest Halifax and Halifax Greek Fest and hence a food lover can accordingly plan their trip around. While visiting in June, one must not miss the Scotia Festival of Music. Known to showcase bands from across the globes and of a different genre, this music festival is a two- week chamber festival and will captivate you like nothing you have heard before.
Halifax in addition to the above conducts their very own quirky festivals. Nocturne Festival, which showcases the visual art scene at Halifax and is conducted from six in the evening to midnight. Halifax Pride Festival – this festival is held in June in support of the LGBT community. It’s a parade filled with fun, beer and many eventful programs held over ten days such as dancing, film watching. Halifax Garden Festival held in June, is a festival that provides a platform where farmers/vendors and consumers come together to display their harvest and encourage local agriculture.
