The Amsterdam Art scene is definitely among the best in the continent. There are many gigantic institutions which are famous for their collection, including the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk, which organize many amazing art events every year. These events are usually attended by art aficionados from all around the world, and are sure to be an amazing experience for visitors regardless of their prior interest in Art. There are a lot of smaller, independent art galleries too – these have some funky art collections which are great not only for collectors but also for visitors. Amsterdam art also hosts one of the most important European art events, called the Amsterdam Art Weekend. The city suddenly transforms into an internationally oriented meeting place for contemporary art aficionados and artists, and you are sure to run into somebody famous during this time.
Amsterdam Art Galleries play an important role in the art scene of the city – they are the launchpad for upcoming talented artists. Some of the galleries are really new, and have sprouted up in the last couple of years – that does not mean that the quality of their art is not any lower than the older ones. The Annet Gelink gallery has been at the fore of the Amsterdam art scene for more than 15 years today, and the work is known for their groundbreaking characteristics in the European art scene. The Galerie Fons Welters places a lot of emphasis on representing talented young artists who are only making their way up to stardom. Both of these art galleries are located in the Jordaan neighborhood, which also houses the Upstream Gallery and the Grimm Gallery.
The reopening of the Stedelijk Museum in 2012 arguably made it the biggest cultural hotspot in the city, with its modern and contemporary art collection. The complete renovation of the new wing has led to a magnificent collection of art being housed there, and works of artists like Henri Matisse are currently on display in the museum. If you love Performance Arts, you should definitely visit the de Appel Arts centre too. They have an extensive public program which includes a lot of exhibitions and performances for free.
If you want a taste of street art in Amsterdam, you should first go to the Zuidoost. This is a bustling region that lies only around ten kilometres from the centre of the city, and features 14 amazing murals which were painted by the artists of R.U.A. You should also check out the art scene near Spui, which is closer to the inner city – on the way, you are sure to see a lot of points of interest associated with the squatting and cannabis culture in the city.
