AFGHAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE VISITS WINNIPEG
In celebration of International Women’s Day, the Manitoba chapter of Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan and Global College, University of Winnipeg, will host an evening to hear from the courageous Afghan activist and member of parliament, Fawzia Koofi.
Ms. Koofi’s book, “Letters to My Daughters,” was released by Douglas & McIntyre in 2010 and has since received widespread acclaim. The book details her extraordinary rise from an infant left out in the sun to die by her mother in Afghanistan’s most remote province, Badakhshan to her recently announced bid to run for president in the 2014 elections in Afghanistan.
The nineteenth child of twenty-three in a family with seven wives, Koofi struggled against great adversity to become the first female in her family to attend school, ultimately attending university and marrying the man she loved. Ms. Koofi lived under the Taliban regime, and rose to prominence in her passion to join politics and help rebuild her country. She previously worked with UNICEF and various NGOs as a women's and children's advocate. In 2009, she was chosen as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.
