One last dance...
It's been 10 years since SubCity formed - a group of rag-tag musicians jamming out reggae in a minor key in Al's basement, interrupted only by Betty's occasional appearance with a tray of sweets.
In the years to come we'd find ourselves all across the country, making friends and fans everywhere from Cumberland BC to St. Catherine's Ontario.
The Victoria Ska & Reggae festival booked SubCity. then a virtually unknown band, back in 2005. This was the impetus we needed to get on the road for the first time. On that road SubCity really came alive - we became hardened road warriors and in time places like Edmonton, Calgary, Golden & Banff became like a second home.
When we'd drive into Edmonton after not being there for a while there was always a sense of overwhelming excitement. Excitement for the upcoming show that was sure to be a bass pounding, roof shaking, off the walls party - and the excitement for the unknown events to come. Pontoon rides across a lake in October, snowball fights in a valley that miraculously appears in the middle of the city or late night wrestling matches pitting all of us against Sensei Budd. Not to forget the bands; the Operators, The 40 Thieves, The Falklands, FOF just to name a few...
We never moved backwards, never stood still. Every show was different and we can remember parts of almost most of them. SubCity was an entity of it's own cutting across genres and working with great organizations such as Solidarity Rock! to help towards building a truly international underground music scene. United behind the principle of music being written and played for the love of music, brothers & sisters all - united by rhythm, playing for a better tomorrow for everyone. (and a guitar for William!)
It is with a great sadness that we apologize to those great cities and those even greater people: Friends, Family & Fans we won't be making it back your town. The SubCity bus is for sale and we are all moving on.
Despite our affinity for the rest of the country SubCity has always been undeniably and unabashedly a Winnipeg band. Our music filled with our own take on our home here in this frozen wasteland of the Canadian prairie. Please remember when you see us play with other groups in the future - it all started here.
Thus it is only fitting that we end things right back in the same room as the started. Winnipeg's own, West End Cultural Center.
So we announce - for the last time... Live & direct -
A SubCity Finale.
March 9th at the West End Cultural Center.
We are very happy to announce that long time friends The Windups will be opening up the night.
Also the great John Paul Peters of Private Ear Studios will be doing a live-recording of the evening which will be available for pre-purchase at the show.
All tickets are $15 and are on sale now at Music Trader & Into the Music. Please get your tickets soon to avoid disappointment.
Thank you all for your years of overwhelming support we needed you all.
With love,
SubCity
