Hello all,
On Friday, March 2nd, 2012 starting at 8pm, there will be a very special live CD recording taking place at Aqua Books, involving many of your favourite local jazz artists.
For the last two years, Aqua Books has filled a void in the Winnipeg music scene. They have quietly become one of the few places where musicians can perform their original jazz compositions, a risky proposition for most venues. Their support has been invaluable in developing young artists.
You may have heard about some changes at Aqua. The physical building at 274 Garry St. has been sold, and a fantastic new space (tba very soon) is on the way. Along with the move, Aqua Books will be re-born as a non-profit organization called Winnipeg’s Cultural City Hall, Inc.
The recording, which will be called Farewell 274, serves four main purposes:
(1) To raise money for the new non-profit.
(2) To document the current theatre's great sound before it goes away.
(3) To draw attention to the new location, so people won’t be saying, “Aqua Books, didn’t that place close?”
(4) Most importantly, to showcase all of the great musicians we have in our midst, and all of the interesting things that they’ve been up to.
Some of the artists that have agreed to be a part of the recording include:
Steve Kirby
Quincy Davis
Heitha Forsyth
Amber Epp
Aaron Shorr
Niall Bakkestad-Legare
Luke Sellick
Keith Price
Will Bonness
Victor Lopez
Andrew Littleford
Neil Watson
Karl Kohut
Tickets for the show will be $20 (admission + mp3 download of the album) or $25 (admission + CD), and will be available at Aqua Books in advance or at the door. The CD is being produced by Curtis Nowosad, and engineered by acclaimed Winnipeg bassist/drummer/recording engineer Paul Yee, and will be ready in time for Christmas.
This recording will not be possible without your support. We would love to see you out and hear you clapping and hollering on the recording. If you can’t make it, or you’d really like to support the project (including athank you in the CD liner notes), you can pledge to donate at any time in the next month and beyond. An extra donation of $10 makes you a Fan, $20 makes you a Roadie (without having to carry any gear), $50 will turn you into a Promoter, and $100 turns you into one of the Cats.
If you'd like to donate to the project, please contact Kelly Hughes at kelly@aquabooks.ca or (204)943-7555; if you have any other inquiries you can contact Curtis Nowosad at curtis.nowosad@gmail.com or (204)294-9694.
Come be a part of history in the making!
