AFRICAN DANCE AND DRUMMING, STORYTELLING, AUTHENTIC HOME COOKED AFRICAN MEAL, TOGETHERNESS... WHAT BETTER WAY TO SPEND A COLD WINTER DAY?

Come and celebrate Black History Month African style! This is an opportunity for me to share with my community in Vancouver some of the aspects of my culture that I enjoy the most: the dances, songs, music, stories, food and… the spirit of togetherness!

The event is designed to fit everybody’s schedule, with a kids’ drumming class at noon; a dance workshop at 2 pm featuring singer and musician KURAI MUBAIWA who will present his popular Mhande dance which is a celebratory harvest dance done by the Shona people of Zimbabwe; a drum workshop at 3:30 pm by djembefola (master drummer) KOCASSALE DIOUBATE, born and raised in Guinea (the birthplace of the djembe drum), who will explore traditional West African rhythms with participants, and share with them the rich traditional and historical cultural use of each rhythm; and the evening event that will feature a home cooked Cameroonian dinner suitable for vegetarians and vegans, storytelling, performances by Jacky’s dance students, with a grand finale by Jacky Essombe’s Village featuring dancer Jacky Essombe with musicians Kocassalé Dioubaté, Kurai Mubaiwa and YORO NOUKOUSSI, plus The Makalas dancers.

The event takes place at the Victoria Drive Community Hall at 2026 East 43rd avenue. ADVANCE tickets are $25-35, free for children under 10.
