The Press Release
MythMaker Mask Magick
This early spring Hjeron O’Sidhe Director of MythMaker productions, will be touring the west coast teaching the ancient art of leather Maskmaking. Guiding participants through shamanic journeys and archetypical embodiment, learning the craft and magick of the mask. MythMaker is a sacred theatre, storytelling circus from the Valhalla Mountains in BC Canada. They use ancient archetypes, animal medicines, ceremony and performance art to tell stories with ancient meaning and alchemy.
Why Masks?
Hjeron: Masks are an ancient and powerful tool used by our ancestors to help with all aspects of life, from expression and play to therapy and release, from initiations that give us strength and clarity, to comedy and satire that let us more comfortably look upon the imbalances in the shadows of self and culture. All these tools and techniques are still available to us today, and still work the way they have for our ancestors. We need only to learn the tools and walk in that direction.
Why now?
Hjeron: Well now as in this time of humanity is a good question, with so much detachment and materialism in the world, we as a people need a connection to something deeper, and the mask is one tool that gives us that. A physical tool as well as a symbolic tool, when we physically put on a mask, there is a feeling a difference, something subtly changes in our consciousness, and that is when we do it casually and without intention, the ability that the mask has for transformation when mixed with theatre and ceremony is amazing! What is the workshop like?
It’s really a lot of fun and a deep experience at the same time. We journey through drum and shamanic trance into the realms of the archetypes and ancestors to get inspiration for the masks to come through. Then we share and write, draw and design what our mask will be and mean to us. And finally we create, sculpting and molding leather in an ancient secret skill and trade. We also make a mold of our own face to be a template for thousands of masks and characters to be created.
How did you learn this art?
It took me 7 years to finally learn the full art of leather Mask making, I used many mediums to make masks before, but I felt leather was the way I would love most. But I could find no teachers or classes any where I looked, other than going to Italy and spending thousands of dollars. So piece by piece I collected the information and then finally I befriended an amazing mask maker in California Monique of mythic masks. And she told me how it was done (the inner secrets) I went home right away and started experimenting, and crating masks. Then I realized why most maskmakers don’t teach or host workshops. Because it’s really easy and anyone can make amazing artistic powerful masks. So I decided to teach, because an item of transformation is always more personal and powerful when you make it yourself!
Hjeron is available for workshops, with 4 confirmed participants a workshop can be booked in your town.
