Maria Volonte is a Latin Grammy nominee, Carlos Gardel Prize
winner(Argentina's Grammy) and member of the Tango Hall of Fame.
Renowned for her intense, passionate performances, she has released 8
award-winning CDs. Her latest CD is distributed in the US and
worldwide by the Harmonia Mundi label. She has headlined at the SFJazz
Festival three times and recently performed live on NPR in Washington
DC for the "Tiny Desk Concert Series."
Maria's current repertoire of original compositions explores the
fusion of tango and Latin American folk music with the blues. Her
performances are emotionally intense and feature Maria on guitar and
vocals while I play harmonica. Together we tour year-round on three
continents.
What other people say about Maria Volonte:
*The Guardian (UK)* says, "She can mix an intimate treatment of
tangoclassics by the great Astor Piazzolla with songs from Chile and
Brazil, along with echoes of late-night jazz and Latin-blues
fusion. She has a cool, emotional style, plays impressive acoustic
guitar, and is willing to experiment."
*The Los Angeles Times* says, "Volonté is a good example of an artist
who is respectful of her roots yet not afraid to go beyond musty old
formulas… Her musical concept is refreshingly broad."
While *Jazz Perspectives* says simply, "María Volonté combines the
earthiness of Edith Piaf with the sassiness of Eartha Kitt."
Our touring band is a duo: Maria Volonte, guitar and vocals; Kevin
Carrel Footer, harmonica
