Honoring Mike LaRue

Mr. Mike LaRue is a friend, a mentor, and family to a lot of people. To some he's just a great drummer. If you don't know Mike, you're missing out. I grew up with the guy leaving a set of drums in the garage after practicing with my father on many occasions, and I'd sneak out and turn it around to accommodate a left-handed player when I was young. Through this and his teaching me a thing or two I started playing drums at a young age and with the environment provided by my father with a big influence from Mike I've become the DJ I am today. I know many people think a DJ just plays music so a band doesn't have to get paid, but that's not always the case. I've traveled the country, won various competitions and I've played on stages in front of thousands of people, and I definitely honor and respect the musical upbringing I had from my father and the many musical influences he had around in my younger years, especially Mike LaRue.

Mike's been going through some serious medical issues lately and it's taking a toll on him physically, emotionally and financially. With the help of people like Denice Dews, Cat McGinnis, and my father Tip Hammond (just to get started on the roll call... more will be added) we're scheduling a jam session in honor of Mike LaRue. There will be an open mic for people to be able to let Mike know what they really think of him publicly (he can take it, I promise). The stage will be open to musicians who just want to play, and we'll be taking donations to help Mike offset some of the major medical bills he's dealing with. Donations for a raffle will be accepted and we'll be raffling off things all day as well.

If you can contribute please e-mail me at BiggzFS@gmail.com with a time and date I can pick up your donations for the raffle or feel free to drop any items off at The Funk Shop. If you'd like to make a monetary donation but cannot attend Feb. 25th it can be dropped off at The Funk Shop in an envelope addressed to Paul "Biggz" Hammond or mailed to the address below.

Please pass this on by clicking on the RSVP button, then you'll be able to invite your friends to this event. The Funk Shop is a big place so it can hold a lot of people. There is a restaurant side for those that want to bring kids, but unfortunately no minors are allowed in The Funk Shop side. A percentage from food and drink sales during the event will also be donated.

Thanks for your support and encouragement. Mike is known as the Godfather to the boys in my family, and we all love him dearly. He deserves a day of honor and respect, even if the "toast" becomes a "roast". :)
