The Laurier institution is very proud to announce the first 2012 community dialogue series guest speaker Ms. Gissou Nia, the executive director of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center.
Ms. Nia will be speaking on what follows campaigning? Moving from awareness to reform.
Gissou Nia—the Executive Director of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center—will lead a discussion of what actions should be taken to effect change following a sustained period of advocacy. Now that the international community is increasingly aware of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s poor human rights record—demonstrated by numerous resolutions passed by the United Nations General Assembly and the appointment of a UN Special Rapporteur on Iran—what comes next? When do efforts at raising awareness need to shift to increased emphasis on justice and reconciliation processes that will set the groundwork for potential reforms? Ms. Nia can explore different procedural ways forward and potential outcomes in the Iranian context.
