Elements Academy is holding a Kick-a-thon as a fundraiser for the GEMS program, a subsidiary program of KidSafe (www.kidsafe.ca). Our goal is to raise a minimum of $6,000, which will fund the GEMS Program for a whole year.

In keeping with the mandate of KidSafe, which is to ensure that at-risk children have a safe place to go when school is not in session, GEMS provides a safe place for girls to spend time together once a week, to check in with trustworthy, female role models and to feel comfortable trying new forms of exercise in an inclusive, non-judgmental environment. Participants have the chance to try something they have never tried before with the hope that they learn to enjoy physical activity instead of dreading it. Self-esteem and body image are also addressed as is healthy eating with the overall focus on increasing the participation of non-active females in alternative to sport programs.

We chose to support the GEMS program because this program was cut due to funding shortfalls. Before the cuts GEMS was offered at both Grandview and Nightingale Elementary Schools and ran for almost 2 years. Over 25 girls were affected by the cut and we are hoping to reopen it up at Nightingale Elementary with proceeds of this fundraiser.

We want to connect girls with programs that empower! Help us revive KidSafe’s Girls Exploring Motion & Self Program through participation and/or sponsorship of our Kick-a-Thon.
