Drag Queens on trial is a camp romp with pretty serious content. The play has an obvious appeal and has stood the test of time -- it was a hit in Toronto and Chicago and was produced by The Glines in New York City and various cities in the USA and Canada. The three queens come as-they-are somewhat foulmouthed and at the bottom of the social heap, their head are occasionally splattered with sperm, but are unbowed.

The Toronto Star said of the first production in 1986 "Gilbert has spoken eloquently about society's persecution and misunderstanding of non-conformity- and that's a theme that goes beyond the specifics of homosexuality." You'll laugh, then you'll laugh a little more, and your heart will go out to these brave and defiant pretenders who face everything from AIDS to bullying in one-horse hockey towns. In two acts Lana, Marlene and Judy face accusations that hit at the very heart of their 'otherness' but they don't give up, they don't give in, they remain steady in their high heels.
