LEFT FILM NIGHT
"JESUS CAMP"
Sunday, February 26, 2012, 7 pm
Centre for Socialist Education, 706 Clark Drive, Vancouver
Directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, 85 minutes, 2006Canadians are increasingly concerned about the political influence of fundamentalist Christians through the Conservative Party in this country and the Republicans in the United States. The documentary Jesus Camp is a highly relevant examination of the dangerous strategies of the religious right at this critical time. Jesus Camp is about the “Kids On Fire School of Ministry,” a charismatic Christian summer camp located in North Dakota. The film focuses on three children from devout families who support creationism and other anti-scientific concepts. At the camp, the children are taught to “purify” themselves to become part of the “army of God” which will turn the USA against democracy and the “enemy religion” of Islam. The “Jesus Camp” fundamentalists instead proclaim conservative values such as homophobia and opposition to women’s reproductive rights.
Left Film Nights are presented by the Centre for Socialist Education, Young Communist League, and the Vancouver East and Montivero Clubs of the Communist Party of Canada.
