The Canterbury Tales, with its fascinating cast of characters and rich selection of stories, provides the framework for a celebration of fourteenth-century music. We meet a diverse company at the Tabard Inn, and join their pilgrimage to the shrine of Thomas Beckett at Canterbury. From the story-telling competition which enlivened the evenings of their journey we have chosen two tales: the ribald Miller’s Tale is interspersed with fresh and lively English songs and instrumental pieces, while the Franklin’s Tale, set in a French courtly milieu, features music by Guillaume de Machaut and his contemporaries.

Performers in this concert are Janice Kerkkamp, voice, Bryan Martin, voice and lute, Randall Rosenfeld, gittern, vielle, and voice, and Andrea Budgey, voice, harp, and rebec, with special guest singers Ariel Harwood-Jones and Peter Drobac.
