AFRO FUNKE’ LIVE PRESENTS
SAMBA SOCIETY & MOACYR LUZ
**
Considered one of the great composers of his generation, MOACYR LUZ, carioca (native of Rio de Janeiro), has nine solo albums to date, the credits of which read like a “who’s who” of the samba legacy of Rio. His most recent release Batucando (Biscoito Fino 2009) includes the participation of Alcione, Beth Carvalho, Ivan Lins, Mart’nália, Martinho da Vila, Zeca Pagodinho, Luiz Melodia, Tantinho da Mangueira, and Wilson das Neves.
His songwriting, stage, and recording partners have also included the likes of Nei Lopes, Wilson Moreira, Aldir Blanc, Paulo César Pinheiro, Jards Macalé, Guinga, Zé Renato, João Nogueira, Raphael Rabello, Elza Soares, Guilherme de Brito, Casquinha da Portela, and Luiz Carlos da Vila. He has had over one hundred of his compositions recorded by luminaries of Brazilian Popular Music such as Maria Bethânia, Nana Caymmi, Beth Carvalho, Leny Andrade, Gilberto Gil, and Leila Pinheiro. His composition “Vida da Minha Vida” (in partnership with Sereno of the pioneer Grupo Fundo de Quintal) is the title track of platinum artist Zeca Pagodinho’s latest album.
Moacyr’s performances abroad include shows in Angola, Cuba, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, and a special performance for former Brazilian President Lula and the Dutch Queen Beatrix in Haia, Holland. At home in Rio on any given Monday afternoon, Moacyr draws over 1,000 people to his weekly event Samba do Trabalhador (“working man’s samba”), the phenomenal success of which even spawned a live CD and DVD.
Making his first appearance in the U.S., Moacyr comes to California at the behest of Brazilian American musician Beto González, whom he met during Beto’s extended research stay in Rio in 2007-08. With shows exclusively in Los Angeles, Moacyr Luz will be backed by L.A.'s own Samba Society.
