The West Philadelphia Orchestra is a large, raucous band of roughly 12 Philadelphia musicians who all love the spirit and sound of the brass bands of Eastern Europe. From basement parties, to street parades, weddings, concert halls and festival stages, the band brings a warmth and energy that cuts across all the lines: grandmas get up and dance it out right along with jaded teenagers, heavy-footed drunks and whoever else is in the room. While the band members admire and emulate their heroes across the ocean, their sound is their own, cut with other traditions that each of them brings with them- free jazz, Middle Eastern, Brazilian, punk, blues and on and on. Along with their arrangements of traditional songs they play original compositions, continually exploring and pushing the forms in new directions, never losing their way back to what first brought them together- that mournful, celebratory, floor-pounding music from the Balkans.
