The Ottawa Contra community is putting on a Mostly Waltz afternoon dance followed by an evening of Contra dancing. The afternoon will feature the musicians Laura Risk & Nicholas Williams, and the evening will feature the same musicians with the caller Adina Gordon.
3:00-3:30PM - Waltz Lesson
3:30-5:30PM - Mostly Waltz Dance
5:30-7:30PM - Supper Break
7:30-8:00PM - Introductory Contra lesson
8:00-11:00PM - Contra Dance
The afternoon starts with a thirty minute waltz lesson and two hours of waltzing to live music.
Whether you are someone who has only tried their feet at the social waltz on a few occasions or have been doing the social waltzes for a while - this event is for you. You will have the opportunity to refine your technique, see what else you can do in the dance and expand your repertoire, or simply enjoy the music and the dancing
People who are completely new to the waltz are also welcome. We will be providing an overview of the basic step during the lesson and there will be plenty of opportunity to practice during the dance.
If there is something about the dance, it's movement or the moves that you find challenging, don't be afraid to ask for some pointers. We are a friendly crowd and our intent is to grow the social waltz community, so we will do what we can to help.
The evening starts with a 30 minute contra dance lesson covers the basics of Contra Dancing. In addition, before each dance the caller will walk everyone through the pattern or 'moves' of the dance..
The dance itself generally involves forming up in a line of couples and 'walking' to the music through a pattern or series of 'moves' with your partner and one of the couples next to you, before progressing up or down the line to the next couple and repeating the same pattern or series of 'moves'.
You can Join us for supper at a local restaurant, or grab a bite to eat at Loblaws or one of the local coffee shops. The hall will be closed between the two dances.
Mostly Waltz Dance: $8
Mostly Waltz Dance and Contra Dance: $17
Contra Dance Only: $12
You will need indoor shoes and light clothing as the dancing can be quite aerobic, though I would also recommend an additional light layer for when you are not dancing.
Please also note that the Ottawa Contra community has a no scent policy.
