“An Astonishing vocal talent.” Telegraph
“Edwards writes and sings with a trailer park toughness that sounds like she measures her days in cigarettes, cheap booze and fickle men.” Q
Co-produced by Kathleen and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, the ten-track LP was recorded between August 2010 and May 2011 in Fall Creek, Wisconsin and Toronto, Canada. In addition to Vernon (who provides backing vocals and plays guitar, piano, organ, bass, banjo and xylophone), the album includes guest appearances from Francis and the Lights, Norah Jones, Stornoway, John Roderick, Phil Cook (Megafaun), Sean Carey (Bon Iver), Afie Jurvanen (Bahamas) and Brian Moen (Peter Wolf Crier). Also featured are members of Kathleen’s touring band – Gord Tough (guitar), John Dinsmore (bass), Lyle Molzan (drums) – and her longtime friend and collaborator, Jim Bryson (guitars, keys).
“I knew laying the foundation would start with the songs,” says Kathleen, on the making of the record. “For the first time I was open to the idea of co-writing and what had previously been an intensely private process became a challenge to see what would happen with an open mind to a different approach.”
6 Music’s Lauren Laverne played the upbeat ‘Sidecar’ on her morning show and called the album “beautiful” and “quietly brilliant”. Uncut trumpeted: “Always shining through is her natural charm and wonderful voice (which) are wholly beguiling.”
‘Voyageur’ is her first full-length album since 2008’s acclaimed release, ‘Asking For Flowers’, which The New York Times praised as “tuneful and observant” and Rolling Stone called “…poignant…fierce…” Her releases also include 2005’s ‘Back to Me’ and 2003’s ‘Failer’.
Kathleen has played with the likes of Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and John Mayer and played Farm Aid in the US with John Mellencamp, Neil Young, Dave Matthews and Wilco. She is currently on tour with Bon Iver in the UK.
