Tumbleweeds. There’s a dust cloud blowing in from the southwest and on the horizon you can just make out the shape of a rusted-out Chevy van as it cuts through the desert night. On the wind you hear a six-shooter being cocked and a violin tuning up. Is that a rattlesnake or a tambourine? A coyote or a distant horn? And why is the canteen filled with 190 proof plum brandy and not water? The signs are all there... The TARAF DE TUSCON are coming back to town!
MALABOMBA! is fired up to welcome back our favorite outlaw sons of Arizona GABRIEL SULLIVAN & THE TARAF DE TUCSON to La Cita on Wednesday, February 22nd. This blazing nine-piece ensemble of spiritual time-travellers is on tour to promote the release of their new album, NONE OF THIS IS MINE. It’s a collection of swirling, sweaty, danceable songs, filled with twisting violin melodies straight from Romania, the Southwestern twang of Calexico, the greasy groove of cumbia, and a horn section that’s equal parts salsa and Balkan brass. You know those explosive Gypsy Reggaeton tracks that DJ Jason Savvy and DJ Cat Hair have been spinning? That’s TARAF DE TUCSON...and that is but a TASTE of the smoky chipotle-flavored paprikash that they’ll dish into your ears.
Bandleader Gabriel Sullivan cut his teeth as a teen in Tucson’s punk scene, but his musical restlessness kept him seeking out new sounds. Somewhere along the way, he discovered some fascinating parallels between the Mexican conjunto music of his hometown and the thrilling songs of Romania’s Gypsy people. The rhythms are for dancing, the melodies are full of pathos, and the performances are at once virtuosic and rough-and-tumble. While Sullivan is one of the busiest musicians in Tucson, playing guitar, percussion, and keys regularly with half a dozen bands, his Taraf de Tucson is the fullest expression of all of his musical obsessions.
