ABOUT THE PROGRAM.
The Courses
The program will include two formal courses which will be offered through the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSEIS) and the Faculty of Extension at UCLA. The director of the program is Professor Carlos Alberto Torres. During the courses we will invite scholars from UCLA and other universities. After completing the courses, enrolled students will receive a formal transcript from the Faculty of Extension, UCLA (3 credits per course). The course titles are as follows: Emerging Issues in Sociology of Education: Politics and Education and Comparative Education: The Dialectics of the Global and the Local.
For international students, the program will also include an English as a Second Language (ESL) workshop, which will be organized by the Paulo Freire Institute at UCLA. The instructors will be research associates at the PFI who are experts in TESL. After completing the session, enrolled students will receive a formal certificate from Paulo Freire Institute at UCLA. The title of this workshop is Workshop: Writing English as a Second Language.
The Tuition
The tuition of the program will be USD$1,900 per person. The tuition will cover the instructors‘ and teaching assistants’ salaries, course readers, student’s library card, and complementary teaching activities. Airfare, housing, and living expenses will be the responsibility of the student. In order to prepare the program in advance, the first payment of USD$ 700 will need to be paid by April 6, 2012. Money orders and checks should be written to the Regents of the University of California. The rest of the payment needs to be paid by July 16, 2012. If enrolled students decide not to attend the courses after May 7, 2012 there will be a non-refundable fee of USD$ 300.
Housing
We recommend students stay in either the Hillside Residence or the Hotel Claremont (both are nearby UCLA campus) during the period of study. In order to reserve the housing for every student, we will need to confirm the number of students as soon as possible. During the process of housing payment, Paulo Freire Institute will provide help and counsel if needed.
