The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare.
Tuesday - Saturday 15 - 19 May 7:30, & Saturday matinee.
Postgraduate acting students alongside members of the professional classes at the Centre explore Shakespeare's classic, as a tale of capitalist corruption, racism and vice.
Venice is a great trading power with values based solely on the pursuit of money and status, where love lacks sincerity and is simply a means to an end.
A dog-eat-dog world where, in order to enjoy an illusory sense of security through wealth and power, one needs, in equal measure, an underclass and a scapegoat: where a depressed elite walled up in secured Palaces deploy their immense power in pursuit of an elusive sense of 'meaning' and, in doing so, distance themselves ever further from that which may provide them with lasting solace.
