Among the most prolific and popular of the 90s UK jazz funk generation, Incognito's origins can be traced back to the previous decade's Britfunk movement. The mainstay of the band is Jean Paul "Bluey" Maunick, a veteran of Light Of The World. His original co-conspirator in Incognito was Paul "Tubs" Williams, plus a loose collection of friends and associates including Ganiyu "Gee" Bello, Ray Carless, Jef Dunn, Vin Gordon and Peter Hinds. Incognito made their debut when a demo single, "Parisienne Girl', received such strong club and radio support that it was made an official release, peaking at number 73 in the UK charts in 1980.

However, this early incarnation of the band was a brief one, and yielded just a single album for Ensign Records. Williams joined The Team, a funk group assembled by Bello, also working with Maunick on his Warriors side project. However, at the prompting of Gilles Peterson of Talkin' Loud Records, Incognito reconvened in the 90s with Maunick again at the helm. This time, a variety of guest singers were included in the package. "Always There" (1991) featured the vocals of Jocelyn Brown, and was also remixed by David Morales (though Maunick was none too happy with the experiment). It reached number 6 in the UK charts. Maysa Leak, who had begun by guesting on their 1991 single "Crazy For You", left the band amicably in June 1994.The highly-rated Positivity sold over 350,000 copies in the USA, a market where Maunick was also beginning to enjoy success as a producer (Chaka Khan, George Benson). For 1995's fifth album the new vocal recruits were Joy Malcolm (ex-Young Disciples) and Pamela Anderson (a relative of Carleen and Jhelisa Anderson). This time the sound veered from jazz funk to include Philly soul-styled orchestral arrangements and more luxuriant vocal interplay. Further releases honed the Incognito sound to perfection, and the band entered the new millennium with their popularity greater than ever.

Incognito will release a new album "Surreal" in April 2012 to co-incide with this exclusive London concert.

A Senbla presentation in association with AGMP.
