Daniel Simonsen and Matthew Highton are doing some previews. They're work in progress for their 2012 shows, and they're on a Friday! This is a good thing. They will be excellent shows guaranteeing later on in the year you can remark to friends "I saw their shows in their early stages... Yeah really good. They're pretty much the same now actually".
And we're letting you in FREE.
The Shows:
Daniel Simonsen
Norwegian stand-up comedian Daniel Simonsen, winner of So You Think You’re Funny 2008, examines the ridiculous anxieties of everyday life before filming for Russell Howard's Good News and setting off on tour supporting Simon Amstell.
“Look out for this brilliantly offbeat upcoming Norwegian stand-up, who mixes surreal stuff with dry-as-a-bone gags.” – The Guardian
Poking fun at his own flaws and the society around him in his uniquely dark style, Daniel ridicules the problems and attitudes he has encountered in his life – especially those stresses which are inexplicably and unnecessarily self-induced. This is a show for people who are ready to laugh at themselves. And at Daniel.
“He has funny bones” – Karen Koren, Gilded Balloon
A highly acclaimed stand-up noted for his dark and brooding stage presence, in addition to winning So You Think You’re Funny, Daniel was a Laughing Horse 2008 finalist, Chortle Best Newcomer nominee 2009 before taking some time off in Norway away from the comedy scene. 2012 is his big return.
“A Scandinavian who surely deserves his place in the comedy section... his set was the best of the night” – The Scotsman
He first tried his hand at comedy in 2007 and rapidly made a name for himself as a circuit favourite so this is a much anticipated debut solo show from a young, original performer embracing, or simply coming to terms with, a dash of the ridiculous.
Matthew Highton - End of the Road
In previous shows he saved the world from a singularity forged from Tom Selleck's moustache, he tried to force love by killing Mickey Rourke's fabled peacock (and saved the world again). This year he'll be... Errr. Well, he'll be. OK so this show is so new all I can tell you is that it's going to be a magical realist absurd epic that will no doubt reference films somewhere amongst the plot.
Here's some quotes to invoke faith:
Something quite special. Steve Bennett- Chortle
An engaging storyteller with a head for witty fantasy. Steve Bennett - Chortle
Wonderful surrealism. The Guardian
Warm, intelligent and beautifully written. The List
Unbelievably well-constructed… an absolute pleasure to behold. **** Broadway Baby
Weird and wonderful. **** Broadway Baby
An orgy of the odd. **** Broadway Baby
We are potentially watching one of the super-comics of the future. Fringe Guru
Shaggy-haired, maverick raconteur * * * * Three Weeks -Edinburgh
Inspired, ridiculous, interconnected comedy gloriousness. Go catch this fella ** * * Three Weeks - Edinburgh
Awesomely surreal my favourite act so far this festival, it seems almost criminal that his show was free. Matthew Highton is definitely one to look out for in the future. * * * * Three Weeks -Brighton
