About Grassroot Movement in Nepal
Grassroot Movement in Nepal (GMIN) is a non-profit organisation based in New York that was established with a vision of bringing sustainable social and environmental changes in Nepal. The primary focus for GMIN since its establishment in 2009 has been to develop the education sector in rural parts of the country.
In 2011, a group of likeminded individuals based in the UK initiated a new chapter of GMIN. Since then, GMIN UK has worked hand in hand with their counterparts in the US by raising funds to support on-going projects and sharing ideas. Together they aim to improve the lives of thousands who are disadvantaged and thus see their educational opportunities automatically limited.
Despite efforts from the government and non-government agencies, the current situation with regards to education in rural Nepal remains bleak. Students attending schools in dilapidated buildings and then sharing their classroom with students from other years is a worryingly common sight. To make matters worse, there is only one teacher who has the unenviable job of teaching both classes at once. Schools that have tables and benches are considered to be privileged. Poor attendance still remains a huge issue. A child not wanting to go to school because it means walking for two hours, up and down the hills, often needing to cross rivers or streams with no bridges over it is not unheard of. Parents are reluctant to send their children to school because an extra hand in the farm would be useful to get that little bit of cash the family so badly needs.
In the 4 years since it was founded, GMIN has successfully completed the renovation of 11 schools in rural areas of Dang and Sindupalchowk. Two other schools were built in Taplejung as part of the “Earthquake Relief Project” that GMIN initiated after a 6.9 Richter scale earthquake hit the North-Eastern parts of Nepal in September 2011. Over 50 schools were destroyed in the disaster. Work is in progress in two more schools as we speak, making it a total of 15 GMIN schools in Nepal.
GMIN also runs programmes such as teacher training, student scholarships, clothes donation and provides schools with stationery items and learning aids.
Where will the funds go?
Funds raised from this charity event will be used to continue GMIN’s on-going endeavours to develop the education sector in rural Nepal.
