In keeping with his penchant for musical drama and affection for teasing titles, pianist Neil Cowley presented the worldwide premiere of The Face of Mount Molehill at Queen Elizabeth Hall in March 2011.
Cementing his position as a dazzling composer of extraordinary talent, Cowley and his trio scale the gargantuan summit of Mount Molehill where they explore the heights of everyday trivia, and score it to a soaring overture of epic proportions.
Last year, Cowley invited a string quartet to join his trio for an end of year performance to enrich a selection of Cowley classics. The result was stupendous. Nourishing his fondness for grand, commanding sounds, Cowley began a love affair with orchestration, and spent the next year writing, recording and arranging specifically for trio and strings.
Joined by the Mount Molehill Strings, a specially selected ensemble of some the UK’s finest string players, the Neil Cowley Trio perform music from their fourth recording The Face of Mount Molehill (released on Naim, January 2012)
Cowley’s right hand melody is the driving force more than ever before. From pomp and splendour to sprightly and whimsical; from hushed, tender lullabies to colossal and majestic. The Face of Mount Molehill is the trio’s most magnificent and majestic recording to date.
The Neil Cowley Trio have long held a reputation as one of the UK’s most exhilarating live bands. Their intensely thrilling, dynamic sets of propulsive rhythms and aching melancholy cemented with Cowley’s playful on-stage playful banter has been well documented and highly acclaimed, and has won the trio a loyal following of fans.
Performing with Cowley is his long time compatriot, drummer Evan Jenkins and the moustachioed-mohicaned Rex Horan on bass. Also guesting is guitarist Leo Abrahams, renowned for his soundscape textures and collaborative work with Brian Eno, andThe Mount Molehill strings, headed by lead violinist Julian Ferraretto
