We first spotted Denmark's Sleep Party People on one of them 3am internet sessions looking for obscure psychedelia, and found ourselves listening to these cool cats, all wearing some kind of Donnie Darko rabbit mask. Then the computer crashed and we forgot all about them.

A few weeks later they were back on our radar when we listened to the Trentemøller remix of their excellent The Dwarf and The Horse tune and we were hooked.

So we are extremely proud to present to you that very same band in the intimate surroundings of Mello Mello.

Michael Cragg of the Guardian says...

As band names go, Sleep Party People is pretty apt. This Danish five-piece – who wear rabbit masks on stage to overcome shyness – create music for the early hours, when you're about to go to sleep but you've got a nice mug of tea to finish first. Combining a love of ambient music and old instruments, Sleep Party People draw on the post-rock soundscapes of Mogwai and Sigur Ros, with pretty melodies building to brutal climaxes. On A Dark God Heart, the first single from their forthcoming second album, delicate piano chords are soon joined by sighing strings before an explosion of pummelling guitars and crashing cymbals. For the video – premiered here – the two extremes of the song are represented by a young girl who makes an alarming discovery while washing some jeans in the bath (stick with it, the ending is amazing).

SLEEP PARTY PEOPLE

THE ALBUM – WE WERE DRIFTING ON A SAD SONG

RELEASED ON BLOOD AND BISCUITS ON APRIL 9th

“I disguise the lyrics/vocals because I like it that way. I like the sound of it more than I like the fact that the lyrics should be undisguised. The sound is more important to me”.

Sleep Party People is the brainchild of Brian Batz, a Danish multi-instrumentalist with a boundless imagination.

Taking as inspiration the work of Boards Of Canada, David Lynch and Erik Satie, and some classic movie soundtracks, Batz found the sound of the old battered piano in his apartment, coupled with a freaky electronic alteration of his recorded voice, created an eerie, hypnotic sound.

With his other worldly signature sound in place, this one-man home recording project started to take shape, the collection of weird and haunting melodies he created forming the basis for Sleep Party People’s self-titled debut album.

The overall atmosphere he fashioned, one that evokes the disorientating world between being asleep and awake, wasn’t a conscious effort. “I’ve always been a huge fan of instrumental ambient music, but I never felt that I should throw myself into making such music, but when I started the process I really got the taste of it and loved the blend between the organic and digital world.”

Adding a further four musicians to the line up following the album’s release, the quintet - hidden behind rabbit masks - served up an inspired cocktail of explosive shoegaze and electronic dream pop on their first world-wide tour.

Back home in Denmark electronic pioneer Trentemøller showed his approval by offering SPP a slot on his sold out tour - followed by The Antlers and Efterklang pledging allegiance asking SPP to join them as support on their Scandinavian outings. Appearances at Roskilde, By:larm, Eurosonic along with an extensive European tour and a youtube video that clocked up over 195.000 views further cemented Sleep Party People’s burgeoning reputation.

Eighteen months on and SPP are ready to unleash their second album on which they take the music further into the mysterious but rejuvenating sound of strange voices, angelic melodies and powerful soundscapes.

“The lyrics are more uplifting and positive. It's about enjoying life and turning every position you're put into, into something positive. I know it's a cliche, but that's an important message to get out instead of always being so god damn melancholic and sad, which I sometimes struggle with”, says Batz.

The first taste from the album, A Dark God Heart, comes accompanied by an evocative video capturing the unsettling mood Sleep Party People so effortlessly create. UK audiences will get their first opportunity to see the band live in March – dates to be announced.

Sleep Party People - the soundtrack for your dreams.
