Dodgy
Nigel Clark (vocals/bass guitar), Mathew Priest (drums/vocals) and Andy Miller (guitar/vocals) decided to regroup as Dodgy after they came together at the funeral of one of their original crew members; it was hard to remember why there had been a hiatus in the first place and very soon afterwards they got together and quickly rediscovered their creative chemistry. ‘What Became Of You’ was one of the first new songs worked on but went through several recordings before the final version was mixed with the rest of the album tracks by the band and Matt Pence (John Grant, Midlake) in Texas. Like the rest of the new album, the single retains classic Dodgy harmonies, melodic invention and poignant lyrics.
If Dodgy were to play one of their classic albums in full (there are no plans at the moment), it might well be ‘Homegrown’ resulting in a set order opening with ‘Staying Out For The Summer’, ‘Melodies Haunt You’ and ‘So Let Me Go Far’ – all hit singles in their own right. It is perhaps no coincidence that when Dodgy first established themselves with the release of ‘Homegrown’, it was the last time the UK was in the midst of a major recession, with ‘Staying Out For The Summer’ a somewhat ironic but uplifting anthem for the times. Perhaps timely then, that ‘What Became Of You’ has been chosen as the song for their return, counterpointing another uplifting melody with lyrics very much reflective of now, questioning how much leaders and major institutions have rapidly lost any integrity as they rely on spin, mistruths and blatant lies to hide their own shortcomings and failings.
‘What Became Of You’ is released on February 20th and Dodgy preview the album ‘Stand Upright In A Cool Place’ at the Bush Hall in London on Wednesday 22nd February 2012 with other dates around the UK to coincide.+Handmadehands
Three piece, punky, infused with elements of folk and alternative indie. Handmadehands released their self-titled debut album early 2011 receiving commendation from among others the BBC’s Raw Talent DJ, Alan Raw.
+The Bazaars
This four piece take their influences from Brian Wilson, The Doors, and Led Zeppelin. 2010 saw The Bazaars receiving regular airplay on Radio One and their video featured on MTV2. In 2011 they released their double A-side single L’Attention/Visions mixed by renowned studio engineer Richard Woodcraft (Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys) and 2012 sees the release of their much-awaited new album.
+Smoke Feathers
The London act, championed passionately by top DJs on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio London, are known for their rock, pop and reggae fusion and playing hard on stage. Smoke Feathers release their latest studio album Liberation early this year on British cult label Delta Creek Records.
+The French 75s
Formed from a chance meeting in Paris in 2008 with the addition of three other members back home, their recent release Scars On My Soul EP was launched at Eiger Studios in December 2011. The French 75s sound is very much a fresh Ian Brown and the vocal timbre of Guy Garvey.
