We are pleased to present this month's speaker, James Coney Island President Darrin Straughan. With James Coney Island facing big challenges in 1993, ownership brought in fresh management by hiring 33-year-old Darrin Straughan, the chain's current president. Straughan had actually been seeking a position at James Coney Island for several years. A University of Houston graduate with a degree in accounting, Straughan was working as the head of marketing at the Kettle Restaurant chain in the late 1980's when he became interested with the the JCI chain. He developed a plan on how to modernize James Coney Island, which ownership eventually not only took to, but embraced and hired Straughan after much convincing on his part. He has now not only restored the James Coney Island name, but is responsible for the growth to 21 locations across the Greater Houston area.
