CHÉ SUPERMAX PARTY MARCH 2010
http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1439122058799BILLY WHO?
For those who do not live here, or for those Londoners unaware of what is going on beyond their own city borders Glasgow is the UK’s disco city. Sure, London may have more disco parties, but when it is broken down, London is also ten times the size of Glasgow, so per head of capita, it works out stronger in this city. Outer Drive, Emergency, Melting Pot, Disco Not Disco, Lovebug, One in Ten, the now-sadly defunct Disco X, and more. It should be at least semi-obvious that I started doing Discopia because there is a real thirst for disco knowledge in this town. And it seems like every new night that springs up now also has some disco within its remit. I do not know why this is the case with Glasgow, certainly it is not driven by a huge gay or black scene. Though I know from experience that there are a lot of punters in this city who would have been into disco the first time round and have presumably passed that knowledge on to their kids/nephew/nieces/mates, etc. And of course, the Weegies love to party, and we all know that disco was designed for partying.
I am taking this opportunity to big up the Glasgow disco massive, and there is only really one place to start: Billy Woods is the most prominent of the new generation of Glasgow disco DJ, with his nights Outer Drive and Melting Pot…
- Niall O'Conghaile aka The Niallist, Discopia Magazine 2004
http://www.theskinny.co.uk/article/42300-the-rise-of-discopiaEclectic, expansive, outrageous, DJ Billy Woods is the one man disco freak show that will blow the mind of the most seasoned of professional disc jockeys never mind club goer. A giant amongst those in the know, thanks in part to his incredible 20,000+ record collection and unique ability to source the most sought after records on the planet for himself and many of major players on the scene. His radical selections and unorthodox approach are as likely to challenge and confound the most flexible of music tastes and dance floors as they are to inspire those of the most hardened opinions to re-engage and embrace genres previously dismissed as outdated, unfashionable, unthinkable.
This could include anything as outlandish as drenching party goers in a ten minute long sonic thunderstorm only to bring the house down with a maelstrom of dance floor friendly rock, to djing directly from the dance floor while getting down to the ecstatic response of party revellers, or simply stripping naked and crossfading with his penis… just to make the point that a dj without 12 inches is wholly inadequate when it comes to hosting a serious adult dance party!
Yet as those who’ve experienced Billy in action will testify, however far out the music gets somehow his sets always manage to come together all at once, often in the most unlikely or unexpected of ways, to make perfect sense just in time for re-entry.
Having almost single-handedly revived local interest in disco through his no boundaries approach to djing during the late 90’s & early noughties, a scene that has gone global in recent years with the success and interest in artists such DJ Harvey, Lindstrom, Prins Thomas and events such as 'Horse Meat Disco', and having performed alongside all but few of the djing greats that are still with us - legends that include Francois Kervorkian, Nicky Siano & Danny Krivit, Billy’s focus in recent years has been in creating, with the help of long time partner, fashion stylist Lisa Ringrose & local audio genius Bob Balmain ‘the best club party experience on planet earth’ here in Glasgow - namely ‘Supermax’.
Who knows what the possibilities hold for Billy should he ever be let loose on the international stage? Recent news is that hot shot dj duo Rub’N’Tug opened their Sarcastic Disco party in LA with Billy’s as yet unreleased monster 39 minute track “Le Supermax Orgasmatron” and Lindstrom co-hort Rune Linebaek has just released ‘Billy’s Wood’ in tribute to our local hero’s record digging skills. Add to this Billy’s debut release ‘Motor Booty’ on NYC’s Ghost Town record label with which DJ Harvey has been bringing down the house and it would seem to be only a matter of time before an international audience comes calling.

BILLY AT OUTER DRIVE (SUB CLUB) 2004
http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1443167119923WHO LOVES YOUR EARS?
The Supermax sound is based around the equipment, knowledge and expertise of local loudspeaker designer & acoustic engineer Bob Balmain of We Enjoy Sound and his aim, along with that of Billy’s, of presenting pre-recorded audio at the party in the best possible way.
Standard club sound systems use heavy compression and limiting to protect their speaker drivers from the costly damage that may be caused by one reckless dj overloading the mixer. Add to this the heavy digital eq that is commonplace within clubs and the use of poor quality digital files by dj’s and the result is sub standard sound reproduction. People have been conditioned to expect poor quality sound at clubs in Glasgow.
Truly great sound systems such as the much lauded Paradise Garage sound system are developed through the trust and innovation between a sound engineer & DJ (in the case of the Paradise Garage Richard Long & Larry Levan) as well as the common goal of all involved to create great sound over and above all. Clubs no longer exist in the format that allowed for the kind of innovation that took place at venues such as Larry Levan’s Paradise Garage and Ron Hardy’s Muzic Box and instead what we have is a fast food mentality where numerous dj’s and guest dj’s pass through venues and the result is lack of continuity and compromised sound quality.
Our aim is draw inspiration from the way in which legendary venues such as the Paradise Garage operated, their attention to detail and their focus on continual ongoing development.
HEAR ANGEL TRUMPETS... AND DEVIL TROMBONES!
Our sound is built with a focus on retaining signal purity through the use of minimal components and an emphasis on quality as a whole rather than any one part. Any sound system is only as strong as the weakest link in the signal chain therefore it’s pointless using £10,000 worth of power conditioning if your speakers aren’t up to scratch. For this reason we no longer employ the custom built Dope Real eq we once used in our system as we feel this unit compromises the quality of our sound system.
Room acoustics are vital to achieving great sound and an important consideration when you host parties in a variety of venues such as we do. In our experience there are no club venues or events currently in Glasgow that take room acoustics seriously. This is why you will often see huge bass heavy systems in acoustically untreated concrete venues at events around town. The result is a sound that may be loud but lacks any kind of audio coherence, detail or dynamic impact regardless of the qualities or attributes of the system. A genuine understanding of room acoustics can help ensure great club sound with real dynamic impact across the frequency range that will allow you to talk to the person standing next to you even in close proximity to a loudspeaker at higher sound pressure levels. If you’re having to shout you can be guaranteed that you are sustaining hearing damage!
GIRLFRIENDS PREFER 12 INCHES...
Standard dj stylus is incomparable with hifi stylus but hifi stylus is more sensitive to the backcueing required to mix records. For this reason Billy has taken the time to learn to cue with Grado Gold hi-fi stylus, which we now use exclusively at the party. We are unaware of any other club event either locally or internationally where the music is 'mixed' that utilises carts/ stylus of such a high standard. We almost exclusively use vinyl because in our opinion this remains the best format for sound reproduction but we are open to new technology and will utilize it where innovation exists but vinyl does not.
The dj mixer is often the weak link in the audio chain and for this reason we use one of the two restored original Bozak rotary dj mixers at our events. The Bozak is the best sounding production dj mixer ever designed. This type of mixer was used in the original install at the legendary Paradise Garage night club. Billy was the first person in the country to regularly employ a Bozak mixer in 2003 at his party 'Outer Drive' and Supermax is the only club event in the UK that uses a Bozak at each and every one of our parties.
One of our Bozak’s is an early silver face ‘D’ model. This version is very rare (only a handful are in existence to our knowledge) and different in design from the later more common DL version. In our opinion it sounds superior to the later model. Possibly the only one of its kind in club use today, this mixer was originally installed at legendary Fire Island disco hangout the ‘Ice Palace’ during the 70’s. DJ’s who’ve handled its knobs include Roy Thode, Bobby Guttadaro & Jim Burgess so expect some heavy disco voodoo action on the dancefloor when it’s in use!
