www.loud-clear.co.ukClassic Album Sundays: 'A Communal and Audiophile Listening Experience' is joining forces with Loud & Clear Hi-Fi and Linn Products for its debut in Glasgow.
Listed as one of the Top 20 Trends of 2012 by London’s ES Magazine this month, Classic Album Sundays has become a media sensation in a little over a year with features on BBC Breakfast, BBC 6 Music, NME, Elle, The Word, The Independent, The Evening Standard and more. Why all the fuss?
The mission is to enable people to hear music as closely as possible to the way the artist intended, to treat music as a precious commodity and classic albums as works of art. CAS uses audiophile hi-fi sound systems to ensure a premium listening experience and people are asked to switch off their mobile phones and to refrain from unnecessary conversation and just listen. The album’s story and musical contexts are also presented to that people can truly immerse themselves in the experience.
Music fans have enthusiastically responded en masse as Classic Album Sundays’ monthly listening sessions have been selling out and CAS sessions have been featured at The Vintage Festival at the Royal Festival Hall in London (for which Loud & Clear put together a £130,000 system), and Camp Bestival and Bestival (for which CAS partnered with Linn). Here is what they have to say:
"Blue" was our first visit, and it was excellent. Sounded as if Joni was playing live, and heard in reverential silence by a deeply appreciative audience.” – David Lye, CAS attendee
“Hearing that fabulous cello line in ‘Eleanor Rigby’ – I could’ve wept with the sheer beauty of it.” – Annette Corbette, CAS attendeeThe event format:
Join us at 5pm to listen to some of the music that inspired the Stone Roses, and also tracks from their musical contemporaries around the release of the album in 1989. The bar will be open, and you can grab some lunch/dinner beforehand at Chinaski's next door, to ease yourself in, and then hang out with a great soundtrack.
At 7.30pm the lights go down, the volume goes up and we play the album from beginning to end on a reference Linn Klimax System. The Audio Menu will include a Kontrol pre-amplifier, a pair of Klimax Solo power amplifiers, a Klimax DS, classic Sondek LP12 and Klimax Loudspeakers.
The Stone Roses "The Stone Roses":
Legend has it The Stone Roses secured their first gig in 1984, supporting Pete Townsend at an anti-heroin event, by Ian Brown sending a charming note to the promoter, ‘I’m surrounded by skagheads. I wanna smash ‘em. Can you give us a show?’
With members donning paisley shirts, leather trousers and long hair, the band’s rock look didn’t quite fit into the Hacienda scene in their hometown of Manchester in the mid Eighties. However, their first single was produced by former Factory producer Martin Hannett although Brown has since said it sounded ‘like four lads trying to get out of Manchester.’
After years of gigging during which they refined their songwriting, and fashion sense the line-up was completed in 1987 when Mani joined, which gave them a more groove based sound. They started to record their debut album in '88 with rock stalwart, producer John Leckie (who had produced Pink Floyd, The Fall and Simple Minds to name but a few), and came out in '89.
After a slow start the album started its crawl up the charts, helped by the single 'Fools Gold', which wasn't included on the album, but generated much greater interest in the band - leading to them topping the NME poll of that year. Along with the Happy Mondays they were at the forefront of the resurgent Manchester music scene - 'Madchester', and subsequently redefined British indie pop, opening the doors for other bands like Oasis, Blur and the whole Britpop movement.
In response to the album topping a host of classic album polls - including the Observer Music Monthly Magazine Top British Album of All Time - Brown retorts, ‘I don’t think it’s the best album of all time. I think, out of the UK, it’s one of the best UK albums. I don’t think it touches any Beatles album, I don’t think it touches the Sex Pistols album, first Clash album.’
Find out for yourself by joining us on Sunday 26th February for some heavy duty listening.
