14:00 THE IDENTITY OF LANDSCAPES
Introduction : Christophe De Jaeger
Moderator : Liz Wells (Prof. Photographic Culture, University of Plymouth)
Participating artists: Massimo Vitali, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Céline Clanet & Vesselina Nikolaeva
It is impossible to present a landscape objectively. The way in which an artist photographs a landscape is always coloured by the significance of that landscape for the individual photographer. The artistic and ideological convictions of the artist also come into play. What is more, a landscape does not exist ‘as such’ but is a human construction that has been subject to different interventions over time.
Whenever you look at an image of a landscape, you are not looking at an objective picture but at an interpretation. The exhibition curator Liz Wells will be talking with four artists from the exhibition Sense of Place about how they see the European landscape and their role as mediator between landscape and observer.

The exhibition From Here On, curated in 2011 in Arles by Martin Parr, Joan Fontcuberta, Clément Cheroux, Erik Kessels and Joachim Schmid, provided an overview of innovative photography, presenting the works of photographers who are using the latest developments in the field of ICT, software and various applications in the development of their visual language. 17:00 FOLIAGE
Speakers: Denis Gielen (curator MAC’s Grand Hornu) and Philippe Durand (artist)
The MAC’s in Grand Hornu will be welcoming the exhibition Le Miroir et les Chemins throughout the summer months. Denis Gielen will be speaking with one of the exhibition artists, Philippe Durand. This French photographer describes his work as poélitique. An art in which the literary meets the political in that it does not reject but invites dialogue. Denis Gielen discusses with the artists the work Foliages , a series he made in Paris in 2011 and depicts the tension between the vegetable and the cultural. Plants, placed behind glass facades on city streets, are the starting point for a refined aesthetic and conceptual exploration.
