February means sexiness and romance. February reeks of love, lust, passion and it’s adorned with stuff shaped like hearts. But when people think of February they don’t often think of Love’s darker, more complicated cousin: OBSESSION. And if perchance they do, the thought is usually fleeting and diluted, like a whiff of the eponymous Calvin Klein perfume.
We randomly cornered some peeps and interviewed them man-on-the-street style about what “obsession” evokes for them – and their impressions were overwhelmingly negative.
Some things mentioned by our lab rats:
- Joan Rivers’ going under the knife 739 times
- Hoarders (and pretty much everything else on TLC)
- The demise of Howard Hughes
- Plucking out your hair by the roots, one by one, until you’re balding, lovingly rubbing each newly naked follicle nubbin against your lower lip, and then twisting each strand into a tiny wreath and saving them in a Kleenex box
Basically, our subjects felt that anything that spawns so deep inside the psyche and then spills out into the world so frantically is pretty freaking terrifying.
But nothing in this world is ALL bad - Is not obsession the very thing that perpetually advances humanity? Sure, it can bring out worst in someone, but can it not also bring out the best? What about becoming fixated on problems in order to find solutions? What about taking things apart in order to put them back together again, better than before? Doesn’t true understanding and mastery only arise as the result of an obsession?
So, as everyone else spends his or her February in a cutesy chocolate-heart induced sugar-coma, we here at the Sky Box at the House of Yes will be meticulously delving into the heart of OBSESSION. We’ll be just as sticky, but for different reasons. And it need not be mentioned that there will also be fanfare, sexy people and the most impressive and death defying aerial acts EVER! We do hope you join us.
