Jessica Flanagan presents Movements, a dance series at Fort Useless. This month we'll be focusing on the collaboration of dance, film, and comedy showing a trio of pieces, with the help from our friends at Pentacle's Movement Media.
To start the evening, Jessica will present her short film, "In Class With Maria". Jessica captured her ballet teacher on audio tape and then found video clips to illustrate the amusing stories and conversation that takes place in an average ballet class taught by Maria Zannieri at Westside Dance Project in Midtown, Manhattan.
Kate Taylor will follow with "Best Day Ever", created and performed by Kate Taylor, consultant: Michael Henry. First day on her job at Whole Foods, Me gets a welcome gift from her co-workers. A fun, touching piece about hopes and dreams…and reality.
Our headliners, The MerryMakers', will round our the night with "Adventures in Anytown", part vaudeville act, part silent film era comedy. This piece is the result of a collaboration between dancers Elizabeth Burwell and Rachel Sattler, and filmmaker Ethan Duff. Dance and film are both effective mediums for visual communication, and by intertwining the two, the MerryMakers created a show that is at once nostalgic and innovative. "The MerryMakers Makes Movies" will explore the ways that nostalgia and image influence the contemporary artist, at the same time morphing into something new. The program will include footage from their show along with clips of influential film images and discussion of their experiences shooting throughout NYC, wearing clown make-up, in the dead of winter. Come to laugh and be inspired, leave tapping your toes!
