Dear lovers of choro and those who long to be loved BY it:
CARIOCA will be returning (triumphantly) to Barbés this Friday. We are transporting classic Brazilian choros and chorinhos by Pixinguinha, Nazareth, Jacob do Bandolim, et al to 21st-century Brooklyn, where they will make you smile, dance, laugh, cry, writhe, scream, drink, think, and twirl your ornate moustaches in your white-gloved fingers. This group is steadily gathering steam. Make sure and come see us before we explode and set back construction of the railroad several weeks.
CARIOCA:
Zé Mauricio - pandeiro and percussion
JAmes Shipp - vibraphone
Mike LaValle - precision bass
CARIOCA is a group of Brooklyn musicians exploring classic Brazilian choro music (think samba + ragtime + tango = classy and sexy) outside of the roda and its traditional instrumentations; they infuse the open and improvisatory spirit of New York's creative music scene into these classic tunes by Pixinguinha, Ernesto Nazareth, and Jacob do Bandolim
Zé Mauricio is the Carioca in CARIOCA; originally from Rio de Janeiro, he has played with familiar Brazilian masters such as Romero Lubambo, Nilson Matta, Nana Vasconcelos, Helio Alves, and Seu Jorge, as well as American legends Wynton Marsalis and Yo-Yo Ma. Zé is a founding member of New York percussion powerhouse Cyro Baptista's eclectic band/performance troupe 'Beat the Donkey.'
Vibraphonist James Shipp is the Marylander in CARIOCA: since arriving in New York in 1998, he has played with vocalists Kurt Elling, Kate McGarry, Peter Eldridge Janis Siegel, Jean Rohe, Jo Lawry, and Becca Stevens. He has also worked with Richard Galliano, pianist Fabian Almazan, Max Pollak's tap troupe Rumbatap, trumpeters Ray Vega and Etienne Charles et al. James leads the quartet called Nós Novo, whose music combines Irish/UK folk music, Brazilian rhythms, and jazz-inspired improvisation. www.jamesshipp.com www.nosnovo.net.
Mike LaValle holds down the bass for most of the Brazilians and almostBrazilians in Kings County. He has been a member of Rob Curto's Forro for All, Clay Ross's Matuto, and Scott Kettner's Nation Beat. Mike co-leads the experimental pop group 'The Hot Holy Mess' with violininst/vocalist Skye Steele.
