In celebration of this years third Playgroup Festival on the 3/4/...5 August, we’re throwing a HUGE party at the Concorde 2 in Brighton, with some of the Counties leading lights in live music – it’s a right royal knees up with 8 piece Ska-Hop orchestras, a real life hidden orchestra, a dash of live reggae and a heavy smattering of Funk, Soul, Electro and Swing!

You’ll be entertained by wandering minstrels, have your face painted a multitude of colours and maybe win a few competitions along the way – it’s a classic Playgroup night and we can’t wait for you to see it!

★ BABYHEAD

An 8 headed Ska, Hip-Hop, Dub monster! Babyhead hail from Bristol and were born out of a love for Jamacan soundclash, forged through a do it yourself punk rock attitude and delivered with a raw Hip hop swagger, they are in a word – awesome.

Having supported acts ranging from Ozomatli and Breakestra to Rodney P and Toots and the Maytels, they have cut their teeth on every festival main stage in the UK over the last 10 years. We can’t wait!

★ HIDDEN ORCHESTRA

Signed to TruThoughts, Edinburgh-based Hidden Orchestra combine two live drummers, organic samples and dubby basslines to make cinematic, emotive, percussive music. Their sound, resplendent with layers of intense soundscapes, takes audiences on a deep and truly original sonic journey containing elements of jazz, classical, drum’n’bass, rock and hip hop, moulded into a coherent whole.

After their show with us at the Blind Tiger Club, they’ve become one of our favourite live acts of 2011 – if you haven’t seen them before, prepare to be blown away.

★ RESONATORS

The legendary 8 piece Brighton Reggae and Roots act that have played up and down the Country to sell out shows – having been signed to Wah Wah 45, they are fast becoming one of this nations treasured live Dub acts.

★ DJ CHEEBA

Ninjatunes, DJ Cheeba is the sight and sound of Solid Steel’s new school. Heady beats and blistering sounds come together with iconic music videos, obscure YouTube finds and creative custom edits as Bristol’s DJ Cheeba cuts and splices audio and video live on turntables. Following the invitation to join Ninja Tune’s legendary Solid Steel radio show as a resident in 2010, Cheeba has spent the last couple of years producing a number of themed audio mixtapes and groundbreaking video projects while relentlessly touring some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in the UK, Europe and beyond.

★ ASTRO PHYSICS

Astro-Physics are a 6 piece Hip-hop collective, drawn together from a mutual love of old skool hip-hop. Formed in Brighton on the south coast the band sought to combine influences of Hip-Hop artists such as N.E.R.D, The Roots & The Fugees and blend these with heavy riffs and synth lines more associated with rock and electronic dance bands such as Pendulum and early era Prodigy.
