Charlotte Faber Marais
Charlotte Faber was born in Zimbabwe, and by the time she was 10 had lived in Mozambique, Southern Africa, Zambia, Sicily and Jamaica. Charlotte returned to England to complete her education, but her work and life has taken her to India, Peru, Australia, America and Europe. Finally settling to live and paint in London and Barcelona as an adult, her artworks have been sold to Crolla London, Liberty, Harrods, Barneys and Macys in New York plus many renowned private art collectors all over the world.
In January 2008 Charlotte had a stroke (ICTUS) which paralyzed her right hand side of her body, including her arm and leg.(Charlotte was a right handed artist and this was her dominant side) She then spent 13 months in a Barcelona Hospital recovering and working to rehabilitate herself. Despite this huge setback which would have floored a less determined spirit, she almost immediately started drawing and painting with her left hand, producing lively drawings of the hospital surroundings and herself, unflinchingly depicting her journey always with irrepressible humour .
Charlotte has now mastered use of her non-dominant side and has continued to exhibit her work and win much deserved awards and acclaim. She intends to gather 100 works of art from some of the world’s best known artists who will be asked to deliver a work using their non-dominant hand. Alongside the planned exhibition, “STROKE of GENIUS,” will be articles by the UK’s top neurologist, exploring “Where creativity comes from in the brain.” Stroke is the biggest debilitating accident in the world and is the third biggest killer. Increasingly, it affects older and younger people from all ethnic backgrounds and it occurs without prejudice. Charlotte’s work now, like Freda Kahlo’s captures her emotions and experiences from the stroke and the amazing ability of the brain to adapt to a new path. I Love Art is proud, excited and humbled to exhibit Charlotte’s incredible works and journey as one of our 13 Women on International Women’s Day Exhibition. We hope her story will inspire people to realize that there is life after a terrible illness or accident, and what incredible, adaptable beings we are.
Charlotte epitomizes this adaptability through her new sketch tool.using the latest technology, her i-pad pictures are highly skilful in this new and modern medium, she is actually now ahead of time in the world's top viral artists’ tool. This fantastic new medium is lightweight and perfect for Charlotte to carry around with her on her travels, it has been said that she has mastered the technology as well if not better then Hockney! (All this from her non dominant hand!) These i-pad images, sketches done in recovery and new works undertaken with Charlotte’s left hand will be displayed as part of the 13 Women exhibition.
