Brazilian Day is celebrated in many cities around the world including New York City, London, Tokyo, Montreal and others. Festivities include a celebration of Brazil's Independence Day (Brazil declared independence from Portugal on September 7, 1822). Brazil Day celebrations often include a Lavagem--a cleansing ritual that began in the 18th century in Salvador, Bahia, and is enacted every year at Church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim, Salvador.
