Kreg Viesselman Trio
Students £7 on door only (proof required)
Oslo-based singer/songwriter Kreg Viesselman on his first tour of the UK as a trio. As with his acclaimed solo shows, it is his tremendous voice that first commands the listener's attention; his ability to wield it like the remarkable and refined instrument it has become. Touring new material that showcases his singing through colorful melodies and warm instrumentation, Viesselman will be making the most of his accompanists on this tour. Øystein Hvamen Rasmussen, also from Oslo, is an experimental and jazz drummer with a revered and unique reputation in both Norway and Germany. Also present on bass will be acclaimed UK multi-instrumentalist Mat Martin (Kirsty McGee, Joanna Chapman-Smith).
To experience Viesselman's live show is to take in not only a master of delivery at work, but to be invited into an intimate and brightly lit space where you are constantly surprised by the subtle detail in his work, painted in earthen tones, but revealing great contrasts. It’s nakedness and striking completeness have you transfixed from the moment he opens his mouth.
It has been called "soul" and "folk", for want of better terms, but whatever one calls it, hearing Kreg Viesselman sing is an intense experience. He deals with humanity in its basic and most instinctive forms, in a style that belies a deep human intelligence and wry wit. His is a narrative voice, at once both brutal and touching, which deserves its place in the canon of great American songwriters.
In 2011, Kreg signed to Columbia/Sony Music Norway, who are releasing his next album, "If You Lose Your Light" in 2012. It was recorded at Harrys Gym studio in Oslo by producer and engineer Bjarne Stensli, and features some of Norway's premier musicians.
Viesselman’s last album "The Pull" (Red Kite, 2006) spent several weeks at number 1 in the Euro-Americana chart after a hail of beaming reviews. The BBC's Robert Elms declared it one of his "favourite albums of the year". The long awaited follow-up promises new depths and more outstanding songwriting from one of the masters of the form.
‘Deep, intense and literary….a masterpiece.’ – **** Buscadero Magazine, Italy
