Drex is coming to the Atlanta area this February to teach and share some basic and tech poi skills!
He will be teaching 2 classes both Saturday and Sunday that span skill levels from rote beginners to hardcore techies. Check out the breakdown below:
==========================================
Day 1: Saturday, Feburary 25
-=Intro to Poi, Part I: 1:00-3:00 PM=-
Learn the fundamentals of poi! In this class, we will be building from the ground up to create an understanding of the basics of poi motion and how it interacts with the human body with an emphasis on the habits that will lead to good technique down the road.
Skills learned:
Timing and direction
Turns
Weaves
Thread the needles
Prerequisites:
None
-=Horizontal Stacks for Poi: 3:30-5:30 PM=-
Pendulums, antispins, extensions, oh my! Take any move you know and love and use only half of it, mix with quarter-time stalls and floats, and bake till you get your hands and poi heads to line up in any number of creative ways. Stacks are versatile and fun! Come learn a few of them and see how they can be integrated into other tech.
Skills learned:
Inspin, Antispin, and Extension stacks
Hybrid stacks
Stack classification
Compound stacks
Prerequisites:
Stalls
Pendulums
-=After Sunset=-
Epic Fire Jam!! Even if you didn't go to the workshops, come out for a good time!
==========================================
Day 2: Sunday, February 26
-=Intro to Poi, Part II: 1:00-3:00 PM=-
A continuation of Intro to Poi, Part I--here we will take the basic ideas from the first class and learn to apply them to basic flow, gaining the ability to move with the poi. This will include some basic transitions between the moves in the first class and an emphasis on turning and movement.
Skills learned:
Stalls
Turns in all timing and direction combinations
Basics of flowers
Fountains and corkscrews
Prerequisites:
None
-=Poi Hybrids: 3:30-5:30 PM=-
From the unit circle to polyrhythms, hybrids are what happen when our hands perform different poi moves simultaneously. Here we will examine these concepts, as well as how they can be integrated with flowers and horizontal stacks into what I've been calling "hybrid families"--learn how to flow with this type of tech!
Skills learned:
Unit circle hybrids (isolation vs extension, cateye vs extension)
Polyrhythm hybrids (triquetra vs extension, triquetra vs pendulum)
Hybrid families
Prerequisites:
Isolations
Antispins
Pendulums

Who is Drex?
Drex is a fire dancer and activist from Washington, DC. Originally hailing from Boulder, Colorado, Drex first encountered poi at his virgin burn in 2006 and has pursued the art relentlessly ever since. The host of “Drex’s Tech Poi Blog”, a video blog on poi experiments, Drex has cultivated a worldwide audience with his conversational manner and talent for breaking down complex poi tricks. He has taught his unique brand of tech poi at festivals all over the world, including NoWhere, Firedrums, FLAME, Kinetic, Wildfire, and had the honor of teaching a very special group of children how to spin poi through the Moto Moto Circus School in Nairobi and Mombasa, Kenya. When not spinning, Drex is known to devour books on physics, math, politics, psychology, and many other long Greek words. Drex doesn’t sleep much.
